How to improve your seasonal fashion calendar

Updated: Jun 25, 2019

A collection will usually include a variety of styles and colors, from evening wear to casualwear to sportswear. But the most important thing is that a collection should be designed according to the season and therefore the weather.

The haute couture industry taught us to see spring and summer collections debut on the catwalk in September and October and autumn and winter collections in February and March.

Those collection will be then deliver to stores between January and March and July and September respectively.

But what if the collections are not in line with the weather?

Most of the customers won’t shop for scarfs and coats until October, and will continue to do so in February, when fashion companies deliver spring clothes.

Weather always will determine what people wear and will leave shops to suffer for a bad sales performance.

Why do retailers bring in spring products in February, while it’s freezing outside? How could we avoid products mark down?

Here 4 ways to better plan your fashion production:

  1. Reshape the traditional seasonal calendar to the unpredictable weather;

  2. Create products that are seasonless, long-lasting and all-season apparel;

  3. Show in the shop windows products that are closer to the actual season;

  4. Propose ready-to buy collections directly in the catwalk.

If designers take the lead to improve production routine, consumers will hopefully follow the new trend.

Another solution it’s represented by fashion specific IT systems able to filter items, sales, purchases, etc. on their seasonality, not so much year. In fact, because different seasons are managed at the same time, product lifecycle management can help to keep all processes on track. Automated changes on the products help to limit time consuming processes.
